While there hasn’t been an official announcement, rAge Expo 2020 has a date. The South African tech and gaming expo, which is entering its 18th year will be held from the 4th to the 6th of September 2020, according to the official website. This is roughly one month earlier than past years and means the expo will be held before Comic Con Africa this year.
If you’re looking for some proper South African gaming nostalgia, NAG have served up a whole heap of it in the form of the NAG Magazine Archives. Scanned PDF documents of *most* of their print issues from 1998 to 2015 are now available for your reading pleasure.
Johannesburg based CodeBro Café is set to re-open on 2 February 2020. The local business posted a teaser video to Facebook confirming the re-opening and their new location.
Local tournament organiser, ACGL have kicked off the new year with a facelift. ACGL unveiled their newly facelifted website for the 2020 season. A new look and feel, detailed season outline, and possibly the biggest change, the move from XP to the new ELO-based ranking system.
Internationally renowned Cloud 9 has confirmed the signing of ATK Arena’s CSGO team. 3 South African CSGO players: Johnny “JT” Theodosiou, Aran “Sonic” Groesbeek and Tiaan “T.c” Coertzen are now contracted to the MGO and will remain in the USA to compete.
Street Fighter V Player Jabhi ‘JabhiM’ Mabuza competed in Red Bull Kumite in Japan during December 2019. The player, who began his competitive career without even owning a console and watching gameplay on YouTube, has returned to South Africa to share what he learnt at the international fighting games spectacle.
More than 1400 employees will be retrenched from DionWired and MassCash. Retail Group Massmart issued a statement to ITWeb saying a final decision has not been made but should it be decided to close affected stores, DionWired would close. 21 electronic device and appliance permanent stores and 2 pop-up stores could close.
Luca Tucconi will now be Red Bull South Africa’s full time National Gaming & Esports Specialist. Tucconi confirmed his appointment at the energy drink company via a twitter post.
Last year we announced American esports organisation LowKey Esports was entering the South African market. Less than a month after that announcement reports surfaced globally about the organisation’s lack of payment to multiple players. Chris “DaDexo” Van Ysendyk, South African PUBG player and assistant manager for LowKey Esports South African region issued this statement to South African Gaming and Esports: “I was hired along with Greg Robinson and we spent the last few months working to prepare all the launches. We haven’t received any payment from them to date and we have incurred expenses on our own accounts due to multiple delayed payments and excuses from their side. This setback has obstructed a lot of our plans for 2020 but we are working to transition our efforts to a locally managed organisation: Team Global Elite.”
During the December holidays South African streamers worked together to raise money to contribute 57 trees to the #TeamTrees initiative. The local drive was managed by Landon Esports, who shared the good news on Twitter earlier this week.
